**** SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance:white to pale yellow.

Warning! Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause digestive tract irritation. Irritant. Harmful if swallowed. Methemoglobin forming agent. Causes eye and skin irritation.

Target Organs: Blood, spleen.

Potential Health Effects

Eye: Causes moderate eye irritation.

Skin: Causes skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin.

Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation of the digestive tract. Effects may be delayed 2 to 4 hours. May form methemoglobin which in sufficient concentration causes cyanosis.

Inhalation: Effects may be delayed. May cause cyanosis, characterized by bluish-colored skin. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. Causes irritation of the mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract.

Chronic: Chronic inhalation and ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation and ingestion.

**** SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES ****

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.

Skin: Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.

Ingestion: If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.

Inhalation: Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.

Notes to Physician: Effects may be delayed. Treat symptomatically and supportively. If cyanosis is severe, intravenous injection of Methylene blue, 1mg/kg of body weight may be of value. For methemoglobinemia, administer oxygen alone or with Methylene blue depending on the methemoglobinemia concentration in the blood.

**** SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ****

General Information:

As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.

Extinguishing Media:

Use extinguishing media most appropriate for the surrounding fire. In case of fire use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or chemical foam.

**** SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES ****

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.

Spills/Leaks:

Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

**** SECTION 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE ****

Handling:

Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use only in a well ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not ingest or inhale.

Storage:

Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.

**** SECTION 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION ****

Engineering Controls:

Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
